How long could I keep a uk registered car in Spain,  if I was to return it to the uk a a couple of times a year how could the authorities check?.....I think you know what I'm asking. 😉

Thanks peter, some good points.  I am not resident, but frequently visit out holiday home (not longer than 2 weeks at a time at the moment). I was thinking more of buying a cheepie, bringing it to Spain and leaving at the airport instead of keep paying for car hire.

Hi I have just moved to Spain for a year and drove my car over. I have Spanish insurance and understand that I have to have its mot done in the uk. I am told various things that I have to pay equivalent to road tax here so going to visit town hall. I don't wNt to buy Spanish car here as unsure if staying. Regards joyce

It surprises me a little that so many ex pats try to get round or even ignore the law!  Would you do it back home? Maybe not!

Don't under estimate the Spanish police. They don't check every single car every day but they do see this as a means of raising revenue.

Pete's advice and the links he posted are well worth following because as he points out, a roadside check - you may get away with it, probably not - but a major prang they will make it very painful for you. Take the risk at your peril.

If you leave your car at the airport then you will not be insured unless you get the insurance companies consent
