We have a ceiing fan which will only operate on one speec (the fastest). Can anyone recommend a handyman/electrician to fix it/? We did not want to buy a new one unless we have to as we wil be unable to match it up with the other fans in the apartment.

Hiya Jeannie,

Sorry to hear you have a problem with your ceiling fan light unit. You dont say if it is controlled via remote control or via the attached pulley switch.

By your description I am assuming it is the latter, in which case the most common fault would be a defective 3 speed switch, it could also be a faulty  motor unit. I am not sure if replacement parts would be available but quite often you can pick up used fan light  units at fairly reasonable cost, either on this forum or from Charity shops or second hand shops, occasionally you will also find them discarded near to communal bins, if the local bin reclaimer man has not got there before you. 😀.

This way you may be able to avail yourself of a donor switch. I hope this helps.

Jeanie, you are most welcome.

If you can make it to a Leroy Merlin store they have a great selection on offer ,with many assembled and mounted high up on display so as they can be viewed ,including remote control operated versions ,for ease of use.

One tip to bear in mind if going down the route of LED lamps, which is a good option, is to bear in mind the LED variants tend to be slightly longer in length than their equivalent standard filament lamps. If open shade type of light fitting is chosen this should not be a problem and should also not be a problem in recent manufactured light fan fittings but if retrofitting into some older fittings with the enclosed ' Schoolhouse  style ,with one central lamp and shade there could be an issue regarding space as these tend to utilize the more compact Candle lamp and golf ball or mushroom style of lamps, which as stated tend to be slightly longer in length when in LED design.

Also always follow manufacturers guidance on lamp type if using any form of dimmer for the light as dimmers are not always compatable with energy saving lamps..

Hope that helps.

Pete.  Is the fan you bought quiet? I’ve noticed some are noisier than others.

Many thanks
