We’ve driven down through France a multitude of ways. We now favour the western route but going through the Massif Central and the Millau Bridge are also to be recommended.

Try Ibis or Ibis Budget, cheap and cheerful for an overnight stay and dog friendly. Loads in France and quite a few in Spain.

Use toll roads. It’s worth it.

have you checked winter tyre and snow chain requirements ?

you can use the old itinéraires BIS.

BUT !

you will need to find old maps as the routes are not really signposted or advertised well these days

it’s winter and you will no doubt encounter snow

Not recommended in the winter, I did it and drove on snow and ice on the motorway, but nice if the weather is good

Tolls are Ok but we take our time and enjoy the journey, adding a day to trip can enhance trip by 100%

I use Via Michelin (and old map book France has some great 'd' roads straight but you need a good map to find them no traffic) to work out the route and never go the same route all the way.

That way we have some great memories of places in Spain and France where we have been.
