Good news then Jon, at least you know which way you are going now.

On some of the utilities websites you can change your direct debit details if you have an online account with them.

Ken.

Thanks Ken,

I think that is the way forward once I have got the purchase completed and have mitigated the risk of services being cut off by using my Spanish account if I have to. It does look like if I sign up for an online account with Iberdrola and Hidraqua that I might be able to force my Transferwise account on them!

I think once I have a reference I will also be able to pay taxes online by electronic transfer as well.

I wouldn't mind paying a few pounds to a Spanish bank to do this for me but around €200 a year for effectively paying DD's to 3 or 4 suppliers is taking the mick.

Regards

Jon

I am with Hydraqua and Iberdrola so I can confirm that they will accept your BE IBAN number as will SUMA

I have community fees to pay and that was fine too.

It is well worth having online accounts with the utilities, particularly Iberdrola as you can see your electricity trends if you have a smart meter.

Just had an  email from TW.  There will be a £5 charge from the 6th May for their debit card.

I haven't applied for this as not sure I'll need it. I use very little cash over there these days and either take it with me or get some out on my Halifax Clarity card at virtual spot rate and no charges. Need to make a payment to the card to cover the withdrawal though to avoid interest.

Out of interest Ken, how long have you been using Transferwise for you Utility DD's? Just wondered how reliable they have been as don't want to risk an instant supply cut-off if there is an issue!

Thanks

Jon

Hi Jon

A couple of months, Hidraqua and Iberdrola no issues so far.

Suma is only annually and community fees bi annually, these aren't due yet so can't comment but everything went smoothly so pretty confident that all will be ok.

Ken.
