Private Health Insurance
Please can anyone tell me if I need Private Health Insurance. I am registered In the Spanish Health System and also have EHIC and GHIC cards, don’t know why I have been sent both, all very confusing.

Hello Maddy
Are you registered for health care at your local salud in Moraira & do you have a permanant SIP card?
If the answer is yes, then your health care is taken care of & you wouldnt need EHIC or GHIC cards or PHI to use here in Spain, so I'm a bit confused.

Hi Maddy,
How did you register with the Spanish health system? Was it with an S1 from the UK when you applied for residency? If so, I would expect you to apply for the UK's new GHIC (which replaces the EHIC), but I haven't heard of others receiving the GHIC without proactively applying for it.
If you wouldn't mind sharing a little more info about how you proved healthcare provision when you applied for residency, we may be able to give you a definitive answer.
Kind regards,
Kim

Hello Kim
Thanks for answering. We got S1 forms and took them to the INSS. We still haven’t got our health cards but we must be registered in the health system because we have been to the local public, not private, clinic and seen a doctor and my husband has been to the public hospital once and we have not been charged.
There seems to be a problem with issuing the health cards here in Tarragona (we are hoping to buy a property in Moraira as soon as we can sail our boat to Denia or somewhere nearby. We live on our boat at the moment. We got residency because we overstayed in the Schengen because of the virus and my huband’s ill-health making it dangerous to travel back to UK.
Sorry - this is very complicated, but it seems that a lot of people have a lot of different problems, mainly caused by the virus and Brexit.
Thanks again
Maddy
P S We did apply for the new EHIC cards because ours ran out and for some reason Overseas Health Service also sent us the GHICs.

Hello elinspain
Thanks for your reply. We are living on our boat at the moment and stuck in Tarragona, hoping to sail to Denia or somewhere near Moraira where we want to buy a property. We are still waiting for health cards but must be registered at the local public clinic as we have had free treatments there.
We have new EHIC cards because ours ran out. We were also sent GHIC cards. I was just wondering if we need PHI in case of any expensive treatment that we are not covered for.
Thanks again

Hi Maddy
Oooh Tarragona, I visited once while staying in Barcelona, lovely place, so pretty in summer.
In this area, you take your S1 to INSS & then take the paper they give you to your local salud ( with padron, passport etc) who will allocate you a Dr and issue your SIP card with Drs name on the back. Then you are covered for any treatment you might need at the public hospital ( in my case - Torrevieja). If you want private hospital treatment you would have to pay for that.
If/when you get to Denia area & a new home you will have to register at your nearest clinic and get SIP cards relative to the Valencian Region Health System
Good Luck , fingers crossed you can be sailing very soon
Cheers
