I want to fit a towbar to my Mercedes estate so that I can carry our ebikes on the bike rack. I've been quoted 3600 euros. Can anyone advise on how to get a towbar fitted at a more reasonable price. My only benchmark is £350 for a towbar on my Skoda estate in the UK. Thanks.

Forget what happens in UK, it's irrelevant.

In Spain you can only fit a genuine a vehicle manufacturers towbar which will come with papers and bear it's own homologation plaque, anything else will fail an ITV. If Mercedes want €3600 for that then so be it, you have no other choice.

I don't know for sure but it's quite likely that whatever you plan to attach to the tow bar will need to be certified also.

Even when fitted you must submit the vehicle to an ITV station for it to be added to the cars documents. This applies whether the car is old enough to require an ITV or not.

I had a tow bar fitted on a Nissan at Feu Vert by Carrefour in Torrevieja about €400  , I I have seen a few Mercs fitted with a tow bar that folds out and retracks when not in use maybe they are pricing it for that type of tow bar?

That sounds expensive. We had a removable towbar fitted to a Honda CRV for Eu 500, including the new ITV process.

It was a generic brand - not sold by Honda - but had an ID plate on it.

Just to say thanks again. Went to Feu Vert and got a quote for 800eu including fitting. Much happier with that and it's friendly helpful advice like yours that makes this forum worthwhile. Cheers.
