Thanks for your response, is it possible to avoid the Pyrenees?

Probably a stupid question 🤣

Yes it is possible to avoid pyrenees by heading to Pamplona  or up opposite coast to Toulousse.  Best look on map search

Having drove numerous times through to Villamartin if I was you I would avoid the Pyrennes at that time of year like the plague, deffo cross it through the summer the scenery is stunning but not through winter.

Everybody has given you the route through to Bordeaux, once through stay on the A63 come down to Bayonne and down to Irun then cut across to Pamplona down to Zaragozza onto Valencia and down the coast.

We drove down 6 weeks ago  we stopped on Orleans  at the Ibris  and also stopped in the Ibis just out side Barcelona  both are dig friendly hotels. We traveled down with our Springer Spaniel. We did use the toll  road but it was worth it .We got the 18.00  channel tunnel  with 3 easy drives we was in Cabo Roig at 13.00 sunday

Having done the journey many times I would advise not to try avoid the tolls, unless you want to go on a magical mystery tour of rural and urban France. Go with the tolls and get to your destination far quicker, and using far less fuel as its expensive in France.

Depending which route you choose you can avoid tolls in Spain but from our experience we've just wanted to get to our destination as quick as possible. Its a long enough drive as it is....

...

I can't recommend accommodation with a dog unfortunately, maybe someone else can assist with this.

I totally agree with this advice re: to use toll roads, your journey will be endless and far more costly in light of recent fuel increases

Hi depending on your circumstances- abbeville, angers, Bordeaux, jaca. Avoided tolls took in canfranc and was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I can recommend hotels/self catering accommodation in the above towns & other nice French towns. Rouen can be problematic but generally traffic flows ok.

Hi, we have just come back from northern Spain with our dog, via eurotunnel. We didn't avoid the tolls but ibis are usually dog friendly, also hotel campanile and ace hotels.

Tolls for the round trip totalled 190€ just fyi, so as we were only 2/3 of the way to Torrevieja add on accordingly, in case that's a factor for you.

Nb after spending a fortune on the certificate for our dog, the Spanish vet said we could get a Spanish pet passport for about 60€, save a lot of hassle and money, something we'd definitely do if we were coming and going more regularly with the dog.

All the best, Helen

Hi Helen, thanks for your response, very helpful and yes I had heard about the passport, rabies jab and health certificate are very expensive compared to that, might think about doing that whilst out there, just trying to find a reasonably priced dog friendly rental for 8 weeks , dec/feb🤣 thanks again, Heather

How are you travelling?

We travel from the tunnel BUT we are in a motorhome, we do this avoiding tolls as much as possible takes US around 4 nights but then we stop on dedicated motorhome Aires for free.

Hi, If you go onto Booking.com and look for accommodation, you can put in dog friendly hotels, etc. If you are going as far as Spain, pet passports appear to be cheaper. i was quoted 25 Euros last year. Finally watch your speed in France. A few kilometres over the limit and they will fine you. Pre Brexit they had access to your vehicle details via the DVLA. I am not sure if this is still the case
