Hi all - delighted to find your page - most helpful. We are looking/thinking to purchase a holiday home in Oliva Playa - more in the orange groves we love the location of nature/beach.... just wondered about mosquito's because of all the water/rhynes for the Oranges .... but can't seem to find anything online - can it be unbearable to sit out etc .... also any experience of flooding - have seen the information about Gota Fria ?

Many thanks in advance for your time and any feedback. Best Rose

Hi  Rose

I  would  think  you  will  get  Mosquitoes   in  most  areas  of Costa Blanca. Yes  they  tend to drift  towards water  but  anywhere   is  available.  What  if  a strong  Breeze might blow them off  there  flight  path.  I just  accept  them as  a  Holiday    curse 🤬 🙃.

Just  put  on  Mosquitoes   spray

Best  of luck

It is open warfare. They are impossible to get rid of completely, you have to learn to deal with them, they are a menace in all hot countries. You need to do the following:

Preferably cover yourself up when anywhere that they may be, bearing in mind that a determined mosquito can bite through denim. If this is not possible, then you should slather yourself with mosquito repellent, of which there are myriad varieties available in all supermarkets, farmacias, ferreterías etc. Then if sitting out, you need to avail yourself of the mosquito ‘ coils’ which are a repellent in the form of a type of ‘ incense’, which is the nearest description. You light them and the smoke and vapor keeps them away, you need them under the table as well, or your legs and ankles will be attacked. If, like me, you find the smell of these unbearable, although many don’t, there are small gas fueled devices available from some garden centers, these are powered by miniature butane cylindrical containers which fit inside the device, like a cigarette lighter. These take a ‘pastilla’ slotted in over the burner, which emits a deterrent when lit and burning, the pastillas and the gas need replacing as they are used. I find it invaluable. Indoors you need the plug in electric type which again emit a deterrent, and certainly overnight in the bedroom where they gather in troops in the corner of the room, awaiting the opportunity to launch serried attacks.

This is not as daunting as it all sounds, and no, none of us like the idea of the vapors etc, but no one yet, to my knowledge, has died from this!!! You just have to get used to dealing with these things. We have disposed of five wasps nests in the last month and I am currently waging a war against various varieties of ants in the kitchen, there is unfortunately, because of where we live, a huge nest below our house. I have won rounds one and two and will have a few week’s respite,  before they make further forays.

Don’t let this deter you, it really is just a question of becoming accustomed to coping!!

I was an avid camper until two years ago.  Using a well prepared 4x4 I could get to areas quite isolated, and yes the mosquitoes would find me.  We know they use your breath to track you and would soon find my quiet evenings sitting in my tent.  By chance I stopped at a friend's house late in the evening, stopping under a street light I could see countless mozzy's swarming around the street light, switching off the engine I watched the swarm come down and land on the bonnet of my car.  So light, heat and carbon dioxide attracts them.  In depth reading I found that mosquitos from miles around are initially attracted to the light, further investigation shows it is a certain colour of light that does not attract them.  So you can sit outside at night with a light but only a certain colour, bugger if I can't remember the colour though.  And yes I do use mozzy coils under the table, they are great!

Regards
