Car Insurance Renewal

I paid my renewal on a Monday  2 days later on the renewal day I got the new documents  all ok

That evening when I returned to my car the police were looking at my car and told me I had no Insurance !  I showed the email of the certificate No they said its not on our system  and they called the  GURA and the car was impounded until the insurance was on their system and I was issued with a Penalty notice of  800 euro   discounted to 400 if paid in 20 days   ......Next day I went to the police stn  still not on the system ....contacted the Insurance  they said it was insured with no lapse in cover as i have been with them 3 years and would supply a letter from the underwriters    FRIDAY   the car is now on the police system and we get the car at 7pm having to pay 100e Towing charge  Police not interested in any letter from insurance   So although we renewed according to the police for almost 3 days we had no insurance !  what id we had an accident ?  Or stopped by police while driving as this is a higher fine upto 6000 e  ??    I feel i need to pay the 400  asap not incur more possible cost    But who is to blame ?    and what should I do ?

Lodge a complaint against the police. I assume it was Guardia Civil being a traffic offence. Each police station should have a complaints book and you can see the procedures on this site. Guardia Civil

If not Guardia Civll then both Policia Local and Policia Nacional have similar websites. The fact their system. or the motor insurance bureau, hadn't updated the records in a timely manner is not your fault. Take a copy of the insurance letter with you.

That is beyond harsh. Words fail me really. Can't offer advice but you have my sympathy in what seems like a red card tackle.

Hi Marcliff. You give consistently good advice on the Forum but my first thought was, as an immigrant, would I be confident of making a complaint against the Guardia? Maybe my memory is tainted somewhat after being wrongly detained at gunpoint and having my brandy bottle emptied during the 'interview' process. A long time ago admittedly.

I'm not saying it's not possible, I would just always be wondering if there might be a red flag on their system the next time my vehicle is on their radar. And the time after that.

Does anyone know of anyone who's made a successful complaint against the Guardia?

Sorry if this sounds a bit negative, it's not meant to be. I think if it was me I'd try to get a supervisor to review the evidence in the hope of appeal, but I'd probably end up paying the reduced fine and putting it down to very bad luck.

Absolute cretins. Computer he say no 🤨

Rotten situation but TBH I'm with dinnerout on this one, however much it sticks in the craw is it really worth opening that Pandora's box for the sake of €100?

If you want to blame anyone then better to direct your ire at DGT/TRAFICO/MIB etc. for being sloppy in their record updating, not the local cops who were only doing their job. Even though it was a mistake in this particular instance it's good to know they are on the ball and being proactive.

You might find the contents of these links helpful. In the second link, the contents tell us the insurance company may dispute the fine for as this may be included in your policy:
