I have read a few posts about healthcare in Spain . Uk residents are not entitled to EHIC so private is the only option . Would o have to set this up from the uk or would I have to go to Olivia and find a Spanish insurance ?

Does anyone have an idea of what this costs ? I presume we would do this untill we are full residents in Spain ?

If you want to live permanently in Spain you will have to apply to the Spanish embassy while you are still living in the UK. You will need to prove that you have full healthcare coverage paid for a full year and you can meet the financial requirements needed for residency.

Hi Lara,

It will be probably be cheaper to buy private health insurance in Spain.  You could call some of the recommended companies to obtain quotations - I'd suggest trying ASSSA, DKV and Salus to start.  I'm with ASSSA, their contact details are here:

Kind regards,

Kim

The EHIC card is valid till it's expiry date. Mine is 2023. The UK Gov has  now issued its own card GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) supposedly covers the same matters as the EHIC.

That's correct, but an EHIC (or a GHIC) cannot be used by residents or UK citizens applying for residency.

Of course you are correct. I am a three times a year visitor to Oliva so the EHIC/GHIC is good enough for me, at the moment at least!
