Driving in rest of EU with a Spanish Licence

Hi ,
I noticed on the U.K. Gov website that although I might have a Spanish driving licence , I can still only travel to other EU countries in the Schengen group for 90 out of 180 days . My question is :- does returning to Spain “ stop the clock on the 90 days ( or count towards the other 90 days ) as if you had left the Schengen area . Any help on this question would be appreciated.
