I found this article in CAB spain dated 14 August and thought I would share.

UKNS who are residents in Spain and are holders of the biometric residency card (TIE), will have procedure and waiting times reduced at Schengen borders. The card shows your right to enter your EU host country and exempts you and your family members from ETIAS and visa requirements when entering that country.

Hello

I remember seeing this and I have the new card TIE.

If you travel from Alicante airport to Madrid, you don't need your passport.  However, if you go out of Spain, you must have your passport too.  It is actually a Permission to residency in Spain and not a National Identity Card. Look at mine at the top and it says ....

Permiso de residencia in the middle of the card at the top.

I've used it in the Suma office and town hall and it's much better than carrying your NIE and passport with you.

As for the ETIAS...

I've read the same as you and think you are exempt from one but I could be wrong.  Hopefully, someone will correct me 🥴 as they are not out until 2022.

Sue 😘

In getting on for 15 years of living in the EU I have NEVER EVER carried my passport unless it was essential for some administrative procedure.

I do however carry a photocopy of the ID page which has been accepted on the odd occasion I have been asked to produce it.

I work on the basis that if that plus a photcard driving licence and other items with my name such as credit/debit cards and a health card prove insufficient to convince whomever was asking that I was who I claimed to be an hour or two in a police cell waiting for someone to bring my passport would be an interesting chapter to add life's experiences!

You're correct as usual, Sue. ETIAS is some way off yet.

Hi sue

Yes we will require our passports but the way I read this there will be different custom controls for people with a TIE.
