We are thinking of buying and living in Spain in the near future, After doing some research regarding the financial requirements with a deal or without a deal. I would like to ask for clarity regarding sections I have read on this forum and ( Spanish  government sites via Jim ie income of 30 thousand euro per year per person , or buying a 500 thousand euro home also stating that a normal state pension will not suffice and that a proof of funds far greater than the pension they receive will be needed to be able to stay in Spain??? Surely this would mean that many hundreds of thousands of ex-pats will choose to sell up and return to the UK because of proof of funds  also use the FREE  NHS health care.

Surely the people who voted to leave the EU will realise that the impact of this will be of a far greater strain on immigration back into the UK for all resources not just the NHS

Please please correct me if im wrong...

Hi Andrea,

No, you're not wrong.

Worst case scenario, the UK leaves the EU with no deal, so no reciprocal healthcare, no UK pension uprating beyond 2023, no transition period and much greater requirements on Third Country Nationals wanting to move here, which UK citizens will become after Brexit.

In March this year, the Spanish government passed legislation protecting the rights of UK citizens living in Spain, with the proviso that this would be suspended after 2 months, if the UK did not reciprocate for Spanish citizens on a like for like basis.  The Spanish government and the EU stated in a press article in El Pais in September that the UK had failed to do this, although it didn't go as far as saying the Spanish government had suspended the legislation (unless that would have been triggered automatically?).

Like everything else Brexit, it's a case of "watch this space".  And, unfortunately, from what I've seen in the comments of Brexiteers on this forum, they are not interested in the ramifications of leaving the EU.  If there is a mass return of pensioners to the UK, this will exacerbate an already overstretched NHS, not least because professional clinicians from other EU countries are already returning to their home countries.  However, this fact does not appear to have registered with Leavers.

Kind regards,

Kim

This is exactly what we thought and as you so rightly said Kim the leavers have no idea how it will affect their lifestyles and healthcare which will have a massive drain on their bank accounts. God help Britain when there is a mad influx of millions of ex-pats.

Many thanks for your honest reply
