Are there any free castration service? I'm new in in spain and looking after a cat who is coming for food every day. I'd like to castrate him or she.  Pls advise me.

Hi,

The town hall used to provide money to CES Torrevieja to capture, neuter and release programmes but this hasn't happened this year so all are struggling.  I'm afraid that you'll probably have to do what I did with a family of 5 and just take it to the vet yourself (Petsworld deal with a lot of street cats)and have it neutered. If you explain to the vet it's a street cat you may receive a discount. Also try contacting CES Torrevieja as it may belong to one of the colonies they look after and if not at least they are aware of it.

Good luck and thanks for taking on the care of one of the many street cats :-)

Sorry!

I forgot to add to make sure that it is a street cat and doesn't belong to someone before you take any action. If you know cats it doesnt matter who you are, if you're feeding it it will keep coming back regardless of where it lives. Just please be sure first ,thanks.

Lol! No, but they can be neutered so they don't go on to produce hundreds of unwanted kitties :-)

Yes, I know. It was just an observation on the original message just in case the OP didn't.

Make sure it's male first. 🤣

You will also need to consider flea treatment and worming as well. Also chipping it if you intend letting the cat adopt you.

A lot to consider and not cheap either.

There are cat shelters as an alternative.

Hi,

Totally agree with all you said except that at the moment you will not find any room at any shelter,  especially the Torrevieja municipal animal shelter as we have been inundated with cats and kittens that we physically have no room left to put them, including running out of foster homes. Unfortunately we had to turn away a couple last week who had been feeding a mum cat and kittens and brought them in thinking wed just take them. It was not only distressing for the cats and owners but for me having to turn them away, especially when some people don't understand and start having a go at you.

We're all just volunteers there trying to do our best for the cats and dogs that are there. There is only so much space and once we're full we cannot take any more :-(
