Myself and my wife have a joint account with Sabadell. There have been no extra charges levied.

We have heard that, in the event of a death, a joint account may be frozen by the bank until the estate has been dealt with.  The surviving partner could be severely disadvantaged in such a case, so it makes sense to have access to funds independently for both parties. In theory a deposit type of account, where the bank pay to hold the funds could be the way forward, always supposing one has sufficient money to sit waiting.

As far as I am aware, the type of deposit account I think you mean, is unknown to Spanish retail banking. They simply do not exist. Anything which is promoted as a deposit account, on further research, is usually linked to some kind of investment fund, thus, in theory, carrying the, remote, chance of losing the money.

I know this having recently spent a considerable period of time trying to arrange exactly this for money held by my mother from the sale of her house.
