Hi im steve non resident. Im looking at closing my bank account because of the charges. I've managed to change the direct debits to wise electric and community charge got hidrogea and council left and they have said its been changed over. Dont know if i should wait to make sure they definitely changed to wise and probably get charged another 60 euros from my bank or just go in and close it down. I have been drawing money out using my passport To bring balance down. Any ideas of my best bet please steve

You have to apply in person to close a bank account. To avoid queues and discouraging discussions with unfriendy and fed up bank employees it's common use to draw all funds and "let go".

Hi Steve

When I changed my direct debits over to Wise I had similar concerns to yourself and was a little wary of actually closing my Spanish bank account before I was certain that the direct debits were working properly with Wise.

I found that within the Wise account, in the area that shows your direct debits, then these will only show up when a direct debit has actually gone out of the account and in the case of the IBI/SUMA, as this is only paid once per year, you could be waiting months for this to actually show up in your Wise account, depending upon what time of the year these were set up.

This is how it happened for me but may influence your decision of when to close your Spanish bank account.

Hi I just closed my account with Bankia due high charges, yes, you have to go in person to close and return debit cards. It was easy and they didn't even ask me why I want to close the account ?  I I only had 400 euros in account so they gave a cash back . I moved some direct debits to Wise , some I just paid on line. Slowly will setup all as DD but it's worth moving to Wise.
