I recently opened a non resident Keycard account with Sabadell. I filled out the initial application online, and then got contacted by them to arrange an appointment with my local branch in Spain to finalise the process. They were aware I was living in the UK, so arranged an appointment on my nex...

This is common practice as I'm unaware of any Spanish banks allowing you to complete the process online without a visit to your local Spanish branch.

I also opened my account with Sabadell straight from the estate agents. I gave POA to my lawyers, and I was able to open it using my  passport number (I didn't have an NIE at that time)  without problems. I went back to pick up cards on my next visit.  From what I've gathered (I was looking into changing banks) you need to call in to eyeball the banks and sign forms. I imagine this has a lot to do with money laundering and the like.

And thank you for that information, I purchased my property this time last year. But I do have a appointment at my bank this week and I also will be seeing my lawyer soon and will ask that question just out of interest and for future reference, where did you get your information about the Spanish...

... governments law change. I would still suggest you keep your UK Bank account healthy and up to date showing income and savings, although the UK banks do not sign or use a official stamp any more, they did supply me with a accompanying letter of reference to my account.

It was my solicitor in Spain who has my POA who told me law had changed.

Is it ok to have an EU bank account not a Spanish bank account for residency applications?

Thank you. I have a solicitor who is very good in Spain dealing with everything but they can't open a bank account for me. Thanks again for advice.

They can open an account for you if you  give your solicitor power of attorney

Beware - Sabadell are the greediest Bank in Spain and will do everything within their power to stop you trying to change Banks (tellers are paid commission when customers sign up to their accounts and do NOT want to relinquish this) ................. having recently retired in the UK I made an appointment in Torrevieja branch to discuss a cheaper account (to change from the 35euro per quarter charge account that they automatically open for non-residents) and was told under no circumstances could I change!.....unless I wanted to deposit 700euros per month into a new account and move it again each and every month - wtf?   I asked the Bank Rep if they would opt for that option and the resounding response was No Way!

Open an account with any other Bank and at least you'll have a modicum of respect from the staff!!!!!

If you suffer from high blood pressure...then steer clear of Banco Sabadell ! Most frustrating bank I have ever dealt with !

I don't know if you specifically need a Spanish bank account for residency, but another option might be the online German bank (it is an actual bank) called N26, who I gather can issue a Spanish IBAN which may be useful for paying for services like water and the like. I use an N26 free account (there is a premium one) and I find them very good. Check it out.  See  https://n26.com/en-eu
