Hi,

Does anyone have any information on how I can rent out my car legally in Spain, such that if I need to call the insurance I can just tell them I rented it to the person driving at the time and not have any issues?

I've rented a car a few times from private people and signed a couple of contracts that looked totally different and a few times they said if something happens, just tell them you rented it from a friend for free...

any suggestions?

As a first step why don't you try calling your insurance company/broker and asking if private renting is allowed under their policy conditions. I would have thought not but you never know.

Of course I would have done that! This is a hypothetical question since I'm trying to figure out if renting a car is worth it or not.

As its usual for the car to be insured instead of individual people then anyone can drive the car with the owners permission (if they are a legal driver, etc)

If the owners of the car are charging a rental fee then it starts to sound like an illegal practice.......

Don't be so prickly, I'm not saying you would not have done it but suggested it as a first step to see if it is possible.

I think the bit where the private renters tell you to say to the police that you're not paying for rental but using it as a friend for free speaks volumes. I seriously doubt that your insurance would allow you to rent out your vehicle for monetary gain.

Yeah I think you're probably right. It's just weird how many people rent out their cars privately without a care in the world.

Somewhere in your private motor insurance policy there will be wording that states that it excludes hire and reward, You would need a different type of policy to include hire and reward
