In a very small and very brief nutshell for any stay beyond 90 days you need one of two visas.

1 Non Lucrative

2 Work

For 1 you need approx €34k/annum income (can't be from work or salaries so pensions etc.) and full private health insurance for the first year at least.

For 2 you need a job offer in which case the employer will sponsor the visa.

Visas must be granted in UK BEFORE travelling to Spain.

No other options I'm afraid, unless one of you is Irish or can acquire an Irish passport.

I am assuming that you are from the UK?

If you hold a UK passport you will need to apply for a visa from the Spanish consulate while you are still living in the UK.

If you are in Spain now you need to go back to the UK to apply for the visa.

Here is a link to the various visas that apply to Spain.

Darrow has given you good advice.
