Hi

My partner and I are moving to Spain early next year.  On completing our residencia applications.  Do the Spanish authorities inform the UK authorities that we have now taken up permanent residence in Spain, or do we need to inform them ourselves?

Thank you for any advise.

You need to do it yourselves.

You can fill in form P85 and send it to the Inland Revenue if you wish. However, it's pretty much a pointless exercise as it doesn't affect tax in the UK:

For your first year of residency in Spain, you must submit a tax return in April to June of the following year. Once you've done that, you can get a certificate of fiscal residency to send to the Inland Revenue to get you out of the UK system. I've explained it all here:

What point are you trying to make?

You live here, you pay tax here; it's as simple as that.

For some people, particularly those with a crown pension or annuity income, tax is cheaper in Spain.
