We have no direct flights to Alicante or Murcia as we are from Malta. The nearest airport is Valencia. The only 2 ways I know to reach Torrevieja is either renting a car from Valencia airport or by bus (ALSA to Alicante and then another bus to Torrrevieja). Would appreciate any help for alternative ways.

I think you have already found the way to your destination!
Alternatively also from Valencia city there is frequent TGV train to Alicante terminal.
Estacion autobus de alicante is 15 minutes direct walk from train station. Taxi if luggage etc ?
Then bus to your destination.
