Hi,

Looking for some advice. I am in the process of buying a property in Torrevieja (Jardin Del Mar) and very excited !! Funds will be tight for the first year and the existing floor tiles are poor (not uniform in colour) so I was thinking of painting the existing floor tiles and maybe lift them in a couple of years. The other option is to put a vinyl floor or laminate floor down on top of existing tiles but we will have a fireplace with an open fire. If anything fell out it would burn the floor so I am inclined to stick with the tiles. Has anybody tried painting over floor tiles and if so what was their experience. I have looked at a few youtube videos and it seems fairly straight forward.

The property also comes unfurnished. Any advice on picking up furniture would be appreciated. I would say immediately I would need two beds, a large settee, kitchen table and chairs and a couple of recliners for the roof terrace. After that, I could build it up. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi robbieboy

Welcome to the forum! Exciting times!

Can’t help with floor painting I’m afraid.😄

IKEA is, in my opinion, a safe bet for all things household. Affordable and certainly acceptable, if only In the short term

They’re a far cry these days from the wobbly, sticky back plastic beginnings

Murcia would be your nearest store; just check you’re not contravening any Spanish covid restrictions by travelling there. Good luck 🤪🥂

Thank you very much Ange - I am in Ireland and won't get to travel until this horrible virus passes but there seems to be green shoots of optimism 😊 I am in the process of purchasing virtually which some would say is risky but you only live once !!! Yes, I was thinking IKEA myself but its very minimalist in its design and I would like a nice comfy sofa to sprawl out on in the winter months with a log fire. I guess I could look at some second hand stores but not sure what the quality would be like. Thanks again

Robbie

Oooh, I take my hat off to you. Good luck, I really hope it’s just perfect for you when you finally get there

Agree about sofas, however their beds appear quality (no, I’ve not got one; just an observation) and for a one stop shop for household, it takes some beating

That’s unless you’re prepared, like I was, to cart it all over in suitcases 😄😄. It did nearly cause a divorce, I have to say 🤪🥂

Hi, I don't think putting tile paint on glazed floor tiles would work.

It would surely just scrape off /peel off when coming in contact with friction........... ( for example when moving a chair ) or if someone walks on the area with hard sole shoes ?

Jardin del Mar is a nice area to purchase !

Best wishes,

Jan.

I agree with jan49...your floor tiles could easily end up looking far worse if you get flaking paint or scratch marks. Have you thought about a nice big thick pile rug? Lovely and warm to the feet in winter. They sell big rugs and carpets at Conforama stores.

Hey Steve

We resorted to doing just that this year when we were over, during that really cold snap we had. I’m convinced the room was warmer too 🤪🥂

I’m writing this sprawled out on one of the IKEA sofas Paul Horton collected for us last week, it’s called Vilasund, is a 3seater with chaise longue, and is honestly one of the most comfortable sofas I’ve ever sat upon (no, I’m not on commission)probably down to the springs inside the seat cushions.  Best thing I can suggest is, that if IKEA in Dublin or Belfast opens before you come over, and you can get there, that you go and have a scout around, taking notes of anything you like.  Most of their things are available in both countries (you can check on ikea.es).  If you don’t have transport when you get over here, I and others will recommend Paul as the man to collect it for you, as a businessman he has permission to cross the provincial borders, whilst we mere mortals are not allowed, or have to track up to the Valencia store.

Thanks very much for the update - are you sure they have the same ranges in ireland / uk as they do in spain ?? I thought the ranges would be different given the different cultures
