That is more what I was expecting . I don't want a cheap system but similarly I don't want to pay over the odds if I can avoid it

..., but whatever was necessary to actually end up with usable hot water!, that it was financially no longer viable as the initial capital cost was far too much.

Maybe not financially viable in the immediate future... but you have to consider other things (1) Very convenient to have your ''own'' supply when grid gets cut-off (2) a massive reduction in Iberdrola Bills during ALL the sunshine months, and a great portion of the other months also (generation is not dependent on heat from sun...just radiation in the form of sunlight) and (3) future selling potential increase. We have a 12 panel installation and have reduced our bill from £90 per month to £37 on average........very happy about that. With careful management of usage/generation we are using an average now of 2.75kwh per day (YES per day) and thats with full kitchen appliances - constant hot water and pool pump running 10 hours daily.
