Hi LLT,

We went with Avalon because we live permanently in Spain.  But you make a good point about LV (and other UK providers), especially for non-residents who own property in Spain. Whatever choice people make, they need to ensure they're covered in the event of passing away in Spain and the UK.  I didn't find any provider who offered repatriation, because it's prohibitively expensive.

Kind regards

Kim

Hi Glen,

Different companies offer different types of product.  We've bought a 'plan' with Avalon - we paid the full amount (Eu 4,300) as a lump sum, but I know another member who pays the cost monthly over a pre-defined period.  The advantage of buying a plan is that you're covered immediately....

...  Of course, if you're unfortunate enough to sign up and get run down by a bus the next day, you may think you haven't had good value for money; conversely, if I last as long as my Dad (92 and still going strong), that would represent very good value, as the cost of funerals in 33 years' time is likely to be considerably more than Eu 4,300!  The funds are held in an irrevocable trust in the UK, so subject to Financial Conduct Authority regulations.  I believe Golden Leaves works on the same basis, but you should double-check.

A friend has funeral 'insurance' with Sabadell bank , but there is a 1 year 'qualifying period'.  Unfortunately, her husband died unexpectedly within the first year and she was given no credit for the payments they had already made.  Of course, this type of cover is generally more affordable, but like all insurances, the cost of premiums can increase.

In this area, GrupoASV (link shared in my earlier post) conduct the cremations, irrespective of how you are covered for funeral costs, which is why it's cheaper to go direct to them and cut out the 'middle man'.  But it really depends on how you and your partner feel about coping on your own, in the event that the other passes away.  We've witnessed, first-hand, the excellent service from Avalon in handling both funerals for my husband's parents.

Kind regards,

Kim

Thanks Kim......most informative and helpful.

I will have a look over the coming few months as my first port of call is concentrating on residency.

Kind regards

Glen

My wife's sister and husband both found dead in apartment in April both had insurance for cremation which

took place very quickly about 2 day's after my wife signed the forms

The only thing I would say is make sure you tell relatives as much information of your wishes and details of

wills etc otherwise family's struggle

We've started savings too. But decided to go for basic cremation, simple clean and no fuss, inexpensive too, approx 1500 euro per cremation.

Hi. You have quoted 1500€ for basic funeral, have you had discussions with a company quoting this price for the service or found a company who you are happy to deal with when the time comes.?Have you set up a plan for this basic service? We are non residents but spending half year in Spain so feel we should consider the inevitable.

Pauline.

Do not leave it! It could be expensive or at least very inconvenient. The sooner you get one the cheaper it will be.

I agree, but wanted name of where I can go for a cremation for 1500€. I would probably do plan in UK, unless I can get good price in Spain

Avalon came to my attention in 2011 having being  highly recommended by several people who had dealt with them. Some friends & I took out a plan that cost  just over €3000 per person at that time. but  knew it increased in line with funeral costs each year They were polite &a...

We have just taken a plan with them, the costs never go up ! You pay once and that’s it! You can pay in instalments if you wish, with golden leaves you get the exact same package and also if one or both of you were to die in the uk it’s the same deal more or less. Ours was just over €4000 . Neither of us want to deal with the Spanish paperwork and bureaucracy.

Sounds good to me. Avalon wanted 11.000€ for insuring myself and husband. Preposterous.  As if it isn't enough that we are accosted every time we go in Carrefour by them. Think Spanish favour funerals going ahead quite quickly after passing, and daily costs at funeral directors are very cos...

Hi 🙋‍♀️ is Liverpool Victoria something you already had set up here before you went  Spain ? Only I was told you have tohave Insurances over there and not in England, yiur view please .
