Hola, I have not been here long but can’t believe the amount of sellers on the front. It’s not been too bad until this past week or two but there were 54 on the front on Saturday. It’s not good for walkers constantly having to squeeze through a gap or to get to the restaurants. Obviously knock off goods when they run at the first sight of the Police. They got busted early last week and stuff taken away from them. 2 days later they were back in full force. Why do the police/council put up with it? Costing money in non paid taxes etc. Are the lads actually European citizens and paying there way like you and I? They sit all over the seats and benches for the locals/tourists etc. If it is this bad now what’s it like in June/august.

Regards

Spanish Fred

Spanish Fred,

This year, I will be living in Torrevieja for 15 years and before that, for 5 years in Guardamar.

When my husband was alive, he sometimes took them to the supermarket or the fruit and vegetable shop.

For us, it was just a simple matter of empathy.

After his death, a couple of them told me to call them if I needed help. Many European "friends" also said that.

Later, when I was moving to another apartment, they were ready to help, stood at my door, helped for 2 days. I did not see any European so-called friend!

I don't mind paying taxes for people in need. They are trying to keep themselves and their families alive. As far as I am concerned, they can stay.

I wish you a peaceful Easter.

Hi Helen, not sure if I got my point across properly. It’s not the ones in need it’s the ones selling goods on there sheets all over the front.

Too many of them to count but the genuine homeless etc ones are different.

Many thanks for responding and I fully respect your point of view and kindness.

Hope your Easter as been a happy one too.

Regards

Spanish Fred

Same in Tenerife with all the Lucky Lucky men some people hated them but the ones knew personally were really nice and genuine. We all have to make money, atleast they actually sell something instead of trying to just con or rob people or sit around begging or pretending to be homeless

Spanish Fred, most of them are poor! Also those selling on their sheets!

I have been in the accommodations of some of them.

They share one room sometimes with 5 people. And not just the room. Sometimes they even borrow each other's cloth, shoes or sandals. Just try to have a chat and listen to them without prejudice. Unprejudiced is a difficult task for many.

Of course, there is also chaff among the wheat. There are also those who are criminal, dealing drugs etc.

We volunteered for many years in underdeveloped countries which makes it easier to see through who is straight or who is crooked. Therefore it was not difficult for us to see through that.

PS: I certainly have a very happy Easter because I have the prospect of my son and family visiting me coming week for my 80th birthday.😊
I do hope, so do you!

It’s par for the course during holiday season. The looky looky men have a watcher at either end of of their pitches and when the guardia arrived they just roll up their goods and just stand around  trying to blend in with the holiday makers. I’m pretty sure one of the local municipalities made them legal last year as long as they sold from a table and not a sheet.  You also get numerous sellers coming in the bars and restaurants up and down the coast. It dies down for a little while - once the Madrileños leave, but then they’ll be back in full force  for the main 3 months season.

As others have said once you’ve been here a bit longer you’ll get to know them personally

Why can't people just accept Spain as it is and stop all the complaining. If they are so fed up with the Spanish way og life, go back home and stay away.

When we had a place at Cabo Roig they sold knock off sunglasses, football shirts and general tat along the strip, which most people are fine with. However, come night time they were offering my mates son and his friend, who were in their early 20s, drugs. So not the loverble Del Boys everyone thinks they are!

Though it must be said, I’ve never been offered drugs, but then again I might look too old!

When people talk about "THEY", they are generalizing.
I was taught that generalizing is the root of discrimination and more.

If you act uncivilized, does it mean that others of your country does as well?.

I wrote in an earlier post that there is also chaff walking among the wheat as is the case in all countries.
Excuse me but I am allergic to this kind of talk.
