It's very clever & obs feeding on bins, etc b4 returng "home".....I just want someone who can get rid of the bugger once & for all!

My wife is a pest controller and I know the basics.

Can you answer if it has taken the poison or set off the traps? Simple yes/no answers.

If you can be specific help is available.

They are fairly predictable in what they do and what they eat. If you have put poison down it can't be difficult to see if it has been taken. Similarly with traps, just look and see if they have gone off.

If you don't want to answer I will back out of this conversation.

Hi, I know you have directed your reply to the original poster but I too have same problem. I have been placing sachets of poison onto several ceiling tiles but haven't been able to see if it has been touched or not. I,m afraid we don't like idea of pushing up tile and coming eye to eye with a rat. Sometimes we hear noise in several places at same time so think we have more than one.

I'll see if I can get my wife to put some tips on here for you.

She did say that if there is any rubbish lying about, or bins without lids, this must be addressed otherwise they will come back even if you kill the present ones.

Local restaurants r in the street behind my house!..... think I need a young man who can clamber onto the roof at the back of my house and poss spray insulation foam into the space that the aircon cables flow into the roof as I suspect this is its entry/exit.....but would need to be in small hrs as I dont want it trapped up there dying/rotting...or creating another entry! I'm 66

Right - Pete's wife here (the pest controller)  don't spray foam filler, they'll just chew through it, you'll need steel to prevent rodent access, weld mesh/chicken wire, much bigger job.

Do you have any plants growing up the outside of the building?  they would need to be removed if they're giving 'it' access.  (also trellis)  Clearing overgrowth/vegetation a meter around your property would also deter them accessing and would allow predators (cats/foxes) access to keep them down.  This will also give you access to the perimeter of your building to see if there's any breaks in the outside of your brickwork...

Where do your waste pipes enter/exit the building? check for any gaps around these points, if you can squeeze 2 fingers into a hole, mr ratty can get in there, 1 finger (or a pencil width!) and a mouse can get in.

As Pete said, there needs to be a source of food nearby.  Be sure yours and neighbours are keeping waste securely/inaccessible.  any bird feeders nearby?  they need to be removed.

any traps you set in your attic space need to be against the edge, ideally.  'over the counter' rodenticide can take up to 20 days to kill a rat, if they eat enough of it.

If a rat chews your wiring, it could be more expensive than calling a professional pest controller out.

hope this is helpful (and not to onerous!)

Linda (wife of Pete :) )

just noticed this - please don't put any poisons outside - on the roof - you'll kill birds and everything else around, absolutely not what you want to be doing.  Only place rodenticide inside or in covered bait boxes.

That's is great info and on checking, although I have no food sources outside my house in the campo, no vegetation around walls, All downspouts go into butts(almost always full of water) did find one with a dead rat floating in last year. Can't find any holes outside(all stone cladded at bottom). Have loft vent pipes to outside which have metal grills stuck to wall on inside so no getting in there. I think they could be getting up the roof tiles(some edges not fully cemented but gutters prevent me getting access as metal screwed to fascia type) and then finding a gap into loft dropping on to suspended ceiling where original above is damaged. May have to go Town Hall and find out if they have an exterminator as I am worried for the loft wiring. What is the usual cost approx for a call out please?
