Does anyone have experience of prostate cancer after care?

My wife and I have plans to move to Spain later this year. However, I have recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer, which I will receive treatment for in the next few months. With treatment, the prognosis is good. After treatment, I will have to have regular checks to ensure that there is no reoccurrence of the cancer. Does anyone have any experience, that they can share, of what I can expect if we go ahead with our planned move?

Thanks, in anticipation.

Are you a UK or EU passport holder?

If UK; then the requirement for full coverage medical insurance may be impossible or cost prohibitive..

Good luck

Hi Jim and welcome to the forum,

If you're a UK passport holder, you'll need to apply for the appropriate visa to move to Spain, which will also necessitate you having private health insurance.  However, if you're in receipt of the State Pension, you can apply to the NHS Business Services Authority for the Form S1, which gives you access to the Spanish state healthcare system, and is accepted as proof of healthcare for your visa application.

Kind regards,

Kim

Thank you for responding to my post. I didn't mention in my post that I have an UK passport. However, Brexit is not an issue as my wife is Irish. We are both retired and receiving state pensions. It is my understanding that, with the right document from the DWP, we will be entitled to the same medical care as the Spanish.

My question is about how good medical care is in Spain. It would be good to hear from anyone who has experienced a similar problem.

Hi Jim,

As I mentioned previously, State pensioners can apply to the NHSBSA for Form S1 to access State healthcare in Spain, funded by the UK.  This form used to be available from the DWP, but the function was transferred to the NHSBSA a couple of years ago.

I have no experience of care for prostate cancer, but State healthcare in Spain is generally very good.  My in-laws lived in Spain for 20 years and both died here at the ages of 86 and 89.  My mum-in-law had several TIAs over a number of years, before being diagnosed with vascular dementia, and my father-in-law was successfully treated for bowel cancer.  They both received excellent care from their local medical centre in La Marina and Torrevieja hospital.

It is expected that you take a translator with you to medical appointments, if you don't speak Spanish.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Jim,

my husband was diagnosed in the UK. He has received his follow up blood tests as recommended and also receives his prescription medications regarding it since we moved to Spain.  You should have no concerns regarding your aftercare.

Good luck with your move.

My neighbour is currently in aftercare following treatment for prostate cancer. The care and service is second to none. Absolutely fantastic. You need to be able to speak Spanish though or if not, you will need to employ an interpreter for your appointments. I cannot speak for Torrevieja area as we are in Salinas. My neighbour was treated and is cared for in Elda and Alicante.

Good luck , I hope all goes well.
