How can expats who I have spoken to complain about health tourism and the NHS feel they have the right to do the very same thing, if you have made the decision to make Spain your home then use their system.

Andrew, it matters not a jot whose system you use, as the UK are paying for it anyway. If someone is in pain they must find their best route to resolve the issue. It is not a case of rejecting the Spanish system, which is not criticised.

That depends whether you have an S1 in which case you are right, but if you are working legally for the qualifying period then you are part of the Spanish health system and care is not paid by the UK.

Hi Nicola,

I assume that you had not read my quote from the GOV UK website before posting your message. You CAN have hospital treatment in the UK if you choose to do so, providing you are a UK pensioner and have registered your S1 with the Spanish authorities. It is important that people read the official website or ring the excellent UK helplines if they want to know the actual rules on health matters etc.
