Hi, my husband has obtained his S1. We went today to the INSS in Torrevieja but were told we had to make an appointment online and the best way to do this was online. I have tried to do this but without success.  Can you help?  Also we have been told that I (his wife) and our son, who is 38 and lives with us, may be able to piggyback on his S1 and obtain access to healthcare, is this right?

I can't help arranging an appointment but if you and your son want to "Piggyback" on your husband's S1 then yourself and your sons name must appear printed on the S1 itself stating that you are both dependents. If its not on the S1 your husband will need to reapply for another S1 which will include those names.

Hi galeallen,

As the spouse of an S1 holder, you can piggy-back on your husband's S1 for Spanish healthcare - note that, when you reach State retirement age, you must apply for your own S1.  However, I've never heard of children being able to piggy-back on an S1, once they reach the age of majority, i.e. 18.  Unless your son is legally dependent on you, i.e. he has a disability and you're his carers?  But in that case, if he has an exportable benefit, he is likely entitled to his own S1, even though he's not retirement age.

It´s been very difficult to obtain appointments at Torrevieja INSS since Covid struck a couple of years ago.  I'd recommend contacting a gestor to do this on your behalf, such as Sophie Johnson, a translator who regularly deals with the INSS and various medical facilities for her clients - she'll be able to get the appointment for you and advise regarding your son's position.  My friends used her to register their S1s at the INSS and highly recommend her, I think her fee was €25 - she can be contacted on: (00 34) 675 36 70 98.

Kind regards,

Kim

The following link will explain the definition of a 'dependant' for Spanish healthcare purposes:

An S1 is what someone from the UK, and resident in Spain, can apply for when you become of pensionable age to enable you to obtain health care in Spain (thats my understanding)..
