Ah, Malta. Such a beautiful country. I once thought I would end up living there, then we ended up with an apartment in Spain instead. Such lovely memories of such a beautiful place Sorry I know this is nothing to do with your enquiry but I suddenly had such a pang of longing for Malta!
You might want to consider private health insurance considering Spain, like many countries, is likely facing a post covid back log on non emergency medical treatment.
All depends on your personal circumstances and those of the back log.

You can always visit for a holiday if you are fully vaccinated. Only problem is that there are no direct flights to Alicante. We usually travel through Barcelona.

Thank you very much. I have already checked with the Maltese health authorities and they informed me that they can issue it as soon as I produced a document that we are receiving Social Services pensions and address in Spain so it shouldn't be a problem. What I am not sure about is if S1 entitles...

If you have an EHIC card, that is valid until the expiration date or when your residencia is approved. You can use that to get prescription meds.

No you can't get prescription meds with the EHIC card but you can get to see a doctor (using the card) to get a prescription for your meds.
