I was a UK Civil Servant and a condition of this was to be able to retire at 60, which I did last year, and take my pension, which is a Government pension.

I have moved to Spain now (starting to apply for residecy/TIE), and need healthcare. I do know that getting my STATE pension gets me a form S1 and free healthcare as per the UK. I will not get my State Pension for another 5 years.

I have looked everywhere, but cannot find any information as to whether my Government Pension counts for free healthcare in the same way as the State Pension does , although the pension I receive now is paid for by the state for the years of work I did for the state.

All I can find on the internet is that my Government pension is not taxed in Spain due to some reciprocal arrangements.

Can anyone throw any light on this?  Thank you.

You will need Private Health Insurance as you will not qualify for free healthcare until you get your State Pension, see the advert for Gran Alacant Insurance on the right of the Forum homepage and speak to Alfonso who will help you with all the options. Although your Civil Service Pension is taxed in the UK you must still declare it in your Tax Return in Spain.

I agree with John. It's only the state retirement pension that qualifies for an S1.

Your civil service pension will still have to be declared in Spain. It won't be directly taxed, but can affect the rate at which other income is taxed.

Thank you. I will contact Alfonso as suggested to see what I should be doing!

"I have looked everywhere, but cannot find any information as to whether my Government Pension counts for free healthcare in the same way as the State Pension does"

That's because you're not asking the correct question.

From the government website

UK funded healthcare: using an S1 form in Spain

You may be entitled to state healthcare paid for by the UK if you live in Spain and receive either:

  • a UK State Pension
  • some other ‘exportable benefits’
also

How to get an S1 form.
If you have a UK State Pension, you must request an application form by phone from the Overseas Healthcare Services. This is part of the NHS Business Services Authority (BSA)"

Yes I can also tell you that I received a fire brigade pension from my late husband and I called Newcastle helpline to get a S1.

They said I was too young and had to wait until I'm 67 😬.

I do have a SIP card through Spanish public health and its because....

1.   I made myself resident in 2008 and

2.   It's not a lot of money.

So I qualified for their health care here. I think now to get this(if your lucky) you have to be resident from 2012???

I hope you sort yourself out and good luck with it all.

Sue 😘

The problem with that is establishing what are the other "exportable benefits". The information on those "exportable benefits" is not actually easy to find. Anywhere

I was obviously aware that to get an S1 I have to be of State Retirement Age. But as I worked for the state and my retirement age was 60, I thought there maybe some provision. It seems that there is, but only for tax purposes, which is fair enough.

All that is necessary to find out what benefits are classed as exportable is to look at the website, or ask, the NHS Business Services Authority, or to search this forum, as the topic has been covered numerous times. However, that wouldn't help you, as you don' t qualify, and will need PHI.

And it gets worse! Check out my posts in the comments section of the latest Jims Guide to income tax.

Although your crown pension shouldn't be taxed in Spain, there is some internal flaw in the online tax system which means it will be.
