Hi I’m a non resident in Spain and own a spanish car albeit 16 years old as it’s only used for holidays and kept in a garage when we aren’t there I was going to dispose of it when the car insurance ran out September 20 but never got out to Spain so it got insured €990 with Salt Bay who are very good but they advised it had to be insured to de register it can anyone advise why my insurance might be expensive or how to de register and scrap it hopefully by Sept 21

Hi Marie

That cost seems outrageous, you should really try somewhere like Linea direct I'm sure it would be a lot cheaper

Good luck

Paul

That is a ridiculously high cost, unless it's a 16 year old Rolls Royce :)

Will you be here before it needs to be scrapped? Personally I'd leave it as long as possible as your insurance is in place and the suma has been paid.

Not sure depends on the pandemic but it looks like it may be worth moving the insurance not sure how I can do this from UK it’s so hard to do anything but need to start early otherwise come September we will be back at €990 again it’s a good running car I’ve had it since new and it passed it’s MOT in November without any issues my garage went and got it from my house and put it back when it passed it’s a Seat people seem to think it’s because it’s so old and people don’t keep cars that long in Spain

We had an old car we only paid €250 a year got insurance from lovely girls in ex Pat's office la marina urb family came out used car for 5 years then it died on us but we give it to our mechanic he had spent do much time trying to fix it and it was going to cost too much he said we didn't owe him because he didn't get it repaired so that was our way of dealing with it

Hi Marie,

I'd recommend getting a quote from Liberty Seguros.  We have our cars insured with them and have had to claim on both policies with no issues.

As you're in the UK, you could phone a local agent and get them to sort this out for you.  I don't know any agents in Torrevieja, but would recommend an agent in Ciudad Quesada:

Rightmove Insurance:

Kind regards,

Kim

From what I've read it's not the norm to change insurance companies mid policy in Spain, in fact a lot of Spanish seem to leave the car insurance in place when selling a car and just start a new policy when they buy a new car.
