A good question!

Do you speak Spanish?  That’s going to be the first question they’ll ask.
Husband.  You could try going it alone but it could take a wee while to get going. I’m thinking that the Market may be a great way to start. There’s a good Sunday market called ZOCO and if you bring samples of before and after work, pictures, large posters, maybe a settee or armchair. I think you could do well. Costs

Care assistant.  Is that with elderly people?  There are lots of elderly people retired and living there but whether or not they would consider paying or using state care I don’t know. I imagine there are some who would happily pay but how would you get work. Yes, the forums could be the answer. Pay to advertise and if you both do good work, you could be a huge success.

Don’t sell your home in U.K., rent it out until you know how things work out for you.  You can rent lovely homes very reasonably.  Quesada may be the right place for you as lots of English speaking people living and holidaying there.

I hope others on the forum can give you better advice but I am sorry but that’s all I can offer you apart from all the luck in the world! I hope you are both successful in your quest to live and work in the sun.

Before I sign off, there may be another lady or two who may be interested in caring work and you could join forces and work together. Before long, you could have a good little business going.

All the very best,

Rosemary.

Something to be aware of is that you have to pay a set amount each month, similar to National insurance but not based on earnings,  from the moment you start your business and regardless of whether you earn anything or not. Find some good professional advice on becoming self employed in Spain, it's a very different process to in the UK. Good luck!

In order to start a business legally, you will need to register as autonomo - self-employed, which unfortunately is much more onerous than in UK as has already been said. There are a couple of firms (3C is one) who already provide care etc whether they actually ‘employ’ people I doubt, I understand it is all self -employed.

It may be asking for trouble just to start advertising, this would effectively be working illegally, which the Spanish authorities are perfectly well aware of and which they are now clamping down on much more tightly since Brexit.

You will also need to have ‘residencia’, legal agreement to live here, fo which you will need to demonstrate an income of some 26000 euros per annum for one person plus another 6.5K approx for a partner; also private health insurance paid in advance for a year.

There are a couple of legal upholstery firms in this area, who have been here for many years; it may be worth researching into what is already here and contacting them. Much of the furniture industry is broadly in the Murcia area, that could be worth looking into also.

If you are hoping to move to Spain and will need to work, you do need to research heavily - Spain has the highest unemployment in Europe, and pay rates are much lower than UK. A majority of people coming here are effectively retired, so not trying to earn a living. It isn’t as easy as it once was, but good luck, and do try to research, research research before burning your bridges.

Speak to Marina Social Care based in La Marina Urbanisation. They’re on Facebook. I worked with them and they’re an excellent and very responsible care provider. You’d need to be self employed as I don’t think they have any employees. Check out the costs of being “autónomo” though. You have to pay social security every month whatever your income. There are introductory discounts in first two years.
Good luck.

Granny Rose has given some good advice, but we differ.  If you sell up in the UK (assuming that’s where you’re from) then you’re more likely to be determined to make a go of it.  If you keep your UK property then it’s easier to give up and go back.  Under the post Brexit terms of moving to Spain the capital you would have in the bank would make it easier to become a Spanish resident, and would help you until you find your feet

Being an upholsterer in the uk I  asked the same question a few years ago I have my holiday home so I was thinking about doing the same a lot of the furniture in Spain is what I would call through away furniture not great quality. It's not built to last yes you do get decent furniture there but to re upholster it's not worth it as a lot of people don't want to pay the price for re upholstery  cheaper  to replace any small  upholstery business out there are making a living but that's it I no it's hard in the uk doing re upholsterey but it's a lot harder in Spain hope this helps . renting a place to see how u get on is a good idea that way if u don't like the area u can move

Cheers mack

Totally agree Purple Gran but the property in U.K. will keep rising while the property in Spain could just as easily drop.  If they keep their house in England, rent it and keep paying the mortgage, it will be a wonderful pension for them in years to come. I would advocate that they do not sell their biggest investment.  Let’s imagine they sell up and become Spanish residents.  5 years up the road, something happens and they need to return home.  They could never hope to get back on the property ladder again.  Ok. If they really make a go of things in Spain and want to buy a bigger family home, they could reconsider then.
