For many Uk residents wanting to work or retire in Spain it has become very difficult. It's possible for some but you have to go through many hoops. I agree with Paolo.

Even if you retire to Spain you now need a large income 36,000€, which is crazy as most Spanish folk don't earn that kind of salary. Being self-employed costs much more than being SE in the UK, where virtually anyone can set up a small business and work straight away, just registering with HMRC and DWP for national insurance which costs £3.15 a week for a SE person and class 4's when your profits are over £11,000.

Then you need health insurance in Spain until you can join their system, which will cost about 800-1000€ each.

If you move before you sell your own home, after 183 days of living in Spain you become a tax resident.  You would then both pay tax on your world wide income and Capital gains tax on your Uk home when you sell it and other taxes on any other assets, savings etc including ISA's. If you sell up before the 183 days and just have money you won't. Spanish CGTax is huge, so be very careful. You would need to take professional advise on those issues, before even considering moving. In the Uk you don't pay any CGT on your main residence when you sell it. I don't like to be bearer of bad news, but there is a lot to look into. In particular financial matters.

If you have skills, I'd be off to Australia like a shot if I was your age. No language barriers, lots of Space, they work hard but also have a better life style.

Sorry to add to your uncertainty but I would sooner be honest about how things can be. I doubt you will be living the life you are after if you are coming to Spain and having to work to survive. Working in Spain is not a route I would pursue, long hours for little pay, that is if you can secure a...

... position that cannot be filled by an EU citizen which I doubt would happen.

The life you see on tv shows is not a true reflection of how things are, living a more relaxed life is not really viable if you need to work. If you have a sufficient amount of money and don’t need to work then you can have the more relaxed lifestyle that people are looking for.

I am happier here than I would be in the UK and would only go back if I had to but I don’t need to work to survive here.

Research thoroughly before making any decisions

I would echo this. I'm retired and it's obviously a great place to live in and explore at your leisure

However, almost everyone we know that works , have multiple stresses due to taxation, lower pay and longer hours in very hot weather , compared to UK.

Do your homework and consider every option prior to applying for visas.

Hi,

Firstly,  if you are a UK passport holder and want to live in Spain permanently you will need to apply for a visa.

If you want to live in retirement in Spain permanently you will need to apply for a non lucrative visa from the Spanish consulate in London, Manchester or Edinburgh. You will need to meet the income and healthcare requirements.

The income requirements for a couple would be around €34,000 per annum and you will need full healthcare either by private (paid for a full year) or through the S1 healthcare scheme which is paid for by the UK government.

There are a few other documents required for the application, some of which will need to be translated into Spanish.

If you need to work then you will need to apply for a work visa. You would need to apply for and secure a position and then your prospective employer will need to apply for a work visa on your behalf.

If you are successful with your visa application then you can move over to Spain and apply for residency within the first month.

If you are EU passport holders you can move over to Spain and sign on the foreigners register within the first month and carry on with your lives.

Look here for loads of info:

How to apply for a Non-Lucrative visa (NLV)

Hope that helps a little.

Steve

Hi Steve I have been googling the 2 forms that you said you get a cheats for I can't find it also is there an english version or is google translate sufficient thanks

I am in the same situation as you. I've contacted the Spanish consulate and they send you all the information you need but I'm still finding it very confusing. I'm now just going to apply for an Irish passport as my grandparents were Irish and that way there is very little red tape and I won't need nearly 108000.. Euros for the 1st 3 years for my non lucrative visa. I only just found this out today about changing my passport as I never even thought of it before speaking to my friend.

If you just put on Google.. You have a UK passport and want to apply for an Irish passport based on your grandparents it tells you all about it and how many generations you can go back. Il keep you updated as I'm starting the process of applying for my Irish passport tomorrow.

I thought you could only get an Eire passport if you were born on the Isle of Ireland, that includes North and South. If you can get it via your grandparents that's great for you. What about your parents, were they born elsewhere?

Hi there. Me and my husband are desperate to move to Spain from the UK but it's a absolute minefield when trying get the right information, I'm finding it really confusing. Could anyone on here give us any pointers or info to help us?! Much appreciated ☀️👍

Hi Laura,

The first thing to do is to contact a Spanish Law Firm who specialise in looking after ex-pats in Spain. I noticed your looking for a work visa, they would be able to advise on this, they would also be able to help with tax implications and wealth tax which is payable in Spain. They could also advise regarding any pensions you might have and the best thing to do with them, even simple things like obtaining a driving licence that requires you to take the road test in Spanish but I believe the written can be done in English as an option.

We use a firm in Torrevieja and they are worth their weight in gold, the email address is [email protected]
