Hi Jan,

Apparently some older NIE Certificates were issued with the printed  words  ' caduca en tres meses '. These were valid for a period of Three months from date of issue.

If your one did not have those instructions printed upon it then it's as Ray D has advised.

Jan, you dont state whether you are a Resinent or a non Resident of Spain.

If Non Resident then, of course, the option of producing your Residency card as proof of holding an NIE number is not an option  you would have.

There are many instances were it is required to produce an actual paper certificate as opposed to simply quoting an NIE number and as such, a replacement  for one misplaced, or lost would have to be obtained ,usually via a Local Police Station , although, in certain instances , there are alternatives.

I am not aware of any procedure whereby this process can be completed ' On Line,', however, it may be possible to arrange your appointment  at the Police Station via an On Line system. I think your original NIE number would be retained and included as part of your new Certificate

If attending is an issue ,there is always the option of using the help of a third Party, via a Power of Attorney .

Good Luck .

Hi Les,

Yes the question of .tracing a lost NIE'  was put to me from a friend of mine who had a property in Torrevieja some years ago but could not trace/find their old NIE number. They asked me if their NIE was traceable online ?

I said I not sure on that....but I will ask those in the know on this Forum.

But very grateful for your comments.

Thank you Lecky Les.

Just go to the nearest Guardia Civil station with your passport - they will find out if you have a current NIE.

Tracing a lost NIE number....

Steve's Guide.....

1. Nothing to hide - go to a police station with ID and they will locate your NIE number in 30 seconds.

2. Something to hide - avoid option 1 and instead look for online solutions.

It is the National Police who deal with NIEs.
