Last month I sadly, and suddenly, lost my husband. I now face the daunting process of managing the associated financial affairs.

Fortunately, we had our Wills updated when we moved to a larger property in Torrevieja in 2022.

I contacted the solicitor who managed our Conveyancing and Wills, to ask about fees and costs. I think our affairs are quite straightforward: Spanish villa in joint names with a catastral value of about €200k, a joint Uk property of similar value and a couple of bank accounts with a few thousand.

I was staggered to be quoted €3,000 to manage the administration, plus about €1900 for Notary, Land Registry etc fees. And I don’t know what tax I’ll have to pay - hopefully not much, following the recent IHT changes, as he passed away in Alicante Hospital.

Does anyone have any advice on where I could take this to be administered, that wouldn’t come with such a hefty price tag please? I could do without the added stress, but need to be careful with my finances at the moment. Any helpful advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi

I can't answer your question directly but I am president of age concern in San luis.

Every tue at the centre at 2pm we have a bereavement meeting for people who have lost a loved one

It isn't counselling but like minded people and as well as meeting people in similar circumstances you may get answers to those and other questions

Thank you Malc. I saw it on Facebook this week, and will try and come in the next couple of weeks. I think it would be beneficial for me at this time.

Hi Jill,

Firstly, condolences on the loss of your husband, this will undoubtedly be a challenging time for you and I echo the recommendation of Malc , the benefit of having like-minded people to talk to following a bereavement cannot be overstated.

We support Age Concern as a charity, and while I cannot give you an exact quote at this stage, as each case is dependent of course upon the individual circumstances, our probate department is also based in San Luis itself and we would be more than happy to meet with you and go through everything with you which will enable us to provide you with a detailed outline of what is required and the associated fees. There will be no charge for this consultation, you would only pay if you engaged our services.

You could perhaps combine visiting Malcolm at Age Concern with your consultation.

If you wish to look into this further, just give us a call on 865 756 058 and we can chat further.

Take care and maybe talk soon.

Kind regards

Paul

My spouse died 5 years ago.The paperwork cost 5000 euro. There were no complications.. Will was made..our taxes paid etc.  I dread to think how much it would have cost if there were any issues outstanding.  It's an extortionate amount but I don't think there's any around it. Sincere condolences.

Thank you. They all seem to have you over a barrel, and at a time when you’re at your most vulnerable.

JillPe   First my condolences.  I too sadly lost my husband suddenly and unexpectedly at Three Kings. The figure that you have been quoted is basically the same that I have been quoted too and was not unexpected either.

For the last five weeks I have been bogged down with paperwork daily, myself. It seems relentless. daunting and is exhausting. I dont seem to have had time yet to breathe.  The more I can do, the less they will charge me.  You should see my dining room table and the chairs !!

The last few days  I have been also sorting out the Form 720s for the two of us,  which are due the end of March, for filing.  Yours may be needing updating, maybe not. Something that you should look at though. I have already updated my Spanish Will.  Then in not such a long time the Rentas for the year  2023  also will need filing.

All I can say to you is that all of the many, many Spanish `people here that I have been dealing with have been more than helpful and supportive.  Going beyond what I would considered that they would do so.  They have and are are bending over backwards to to be of any assistance.

Thank you for your message, Stephanie. So sorry to hear that you too, have lost your husband. I thought we had quite a simple life .. but the weight of paperwork on my dining table also tells me otherwise!

Thank you for the heads up on the Modelo 720. I shall check with my accountant. I assumed that it wouldn’t need updating as nothing had changed up to the end of the last tax year, and that I wouldn’t need to update it until the inheritance is all sorted and finalised this year - so definitely worth my while checking.

I hope you have the support of family and friends at this time. If you need a chat with someone in a similar situation at any time, please private message me and I’ll give you my contact number.

Take care and look after yourself through this difficult time. x
