Advantages and disadvantages of residency

We are a retired couple from Malta (EU nationals) who own an apartment in Torrevieja. We visit on and off but we are non residents. We really love it here. Our only income is our Maltese pensions. I am not sure about the benefits or otherwise of applying for residency. I would greatly appreciate any advice on the matter. I have been reading reading relevant information on the internet but it is not very helpful in deciding.
