I think I'm probably addressing Nicola or Jim please.

We've recently opened a bank account, registered on the Padron, and acquired our green cards, commonly known as residencia, all with the help of an advisor. Although he was not the cheapest, what price peace of mind? We thought.

As he assured us, the NIE number was generated as part of the residencia application process.

Now the problem.  I've just tried to make an online purchase, first time I've needed the NIE,and it won't accept it, as it begins with "Y", not "X". Advice please. Thanks in advance.

NIE numbers are often generated as part of the residency process  and is for life. Mine starts with a Y not heard of any with an X

Hi this is an excerpt from Jim’s Guide to NIE

“The number itself is composed of an initial letter, followed by seven digits, followed by a verification letter. The initial letter is an X for NIEs issued before July 2008, and a Y after then. If you ever see an NIE with a U at the start of it, this indicates a temporary NIE, which is only issued in rare cases.”

I assume you're entering the number without any dashes in it?

If so, then there's definitely a fault with the seller's website, and all you can do is report this to them. This actually sounds unlikely, given how long Y prefix numbers have been in force.

Because it's only public bodies that can collate NIE numbers to names, you could always try entering the number with an X instead of a Y.

Thank you Jim

I like to think I'm not usually technophobic. It was the hyphen, I should have known better.

Thank you Nicola, I'd had a senior moment and forgot to leave out the -

An elementary mistake, I know, but sorted now.

The X was just in their example, flummoxed me.
