EU national needs Residence and padron in Torrevieja

Hi,

Moved to Torrevieja last July. Have been lookiing online but it’s all rather confusing.

I need to register as an EU citizen (residency) as well as getting on the padron. Seems to go round in circles, also need NIE; they say you get NIE with residence, but you seem to need to be on padron. But also read you need to be resident to get on padron! Catch 22?

I have a one year rental contract. Paid rent in advance. Utility bills in landlady’s name. Paid via Wise as was rent, all online.

Have money in Spanish bank account, again, all digital via app.

Have also heard you need health insurance.

What’s the best way to approach this?

Hi Flowerlover,

You're not allowed to register on the Padrón as a non-resident, unless it's to fulfill your residency application. So when you visit your Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) to request the Padrón certificate, tell them that you need it for residency - usually, they'll give you a certificate that lasts 3 months and ask you to return to them with your EU registration (residency) certificate, once you've received it. To apply for your initial Padrón, you'll need your passport, property deeds or rental contract, and a current utility bill. Ordinarily, I would suggest that you could do this yourself, but it seems that currently you can't visit Torrevieja Town Hall for anything without an appointment and they have been proving very difficult to obtain online. I would second the recommendation for Uma Sanz at Get Legal in Spain to help you with all these processes.

My response is based on the assumption that you're the holder of an EU passport, not UK.
