Good morning Ailish,

We have a house in Torrevieja in a gated community but ours is actually on the roadside which we love, so much easier to carry shopping and luggage. We park our car outside too. Although we have a garage and front door at the rear, we don’t bother to use them. The ares we bought in 20 years ago is Torreblanca, close to La Mata which is on the coast, a couple of kilometres from Torrevieja. Excellent bus service into town or La Mata but all within walking distance. There’s a big shopping centre called HABANERAS not far away, again we often walk over to it. Coastal walks are wonderful and you can stop for a coffee or drink and watch the world go by. We love being there in the winter as life is so simple and slow! Sometimes we go away for a few days and drive farther afield. We have often enjoyed David’s coach trips and have enjoyed trips to Granada, Cuenca and numerous other wonderful places... I’d recommend them highly. I’m guessing you might be Irish by your name and if so, you won’t have to worry about the 90 day Schengen rule which is a ghastly rule being inflicted since Brexit.

When buying, make sure you have good, decent storage, a place for a clothesline, somewhere for bikes, a sunny outside space for afternoon and evening sun.  Look for well maintained properties, respectable looking cars tells a story, no dogs barking and most importantly, a living room that can he heated easily in the cold winter nights. Vital.  No stairs leading into it if possible and a fireplace would be a plus.
There is so much to consider. Take your time.
All the best,  Rosemary.

Torrevieja has a large sewage treatment plant south of the salt lakes and north of the N332, the smell at times can be terrible around late evening or early morning, I know it affects one area of Acequion around urbanisation El Paraiso and other areas depending on which way the wind blows.

That’s interesting reading Peter, we have stayed around ten times in the Punta Prima and Los Balcones areas during May and August and are coming back at the end of September, and up to now we have never smelt anything. We love these areas so much we are looking to retire there next year all being well but I have a weak stomach when it comes to bad smells.

Reading your statement has got us thinking now, is the smell more prevalent at a certain time of the year and that’s why we haven’t detected it or have we just been lucky?

I would be grateful if anyone from these two areas could let us know if they have smelt this.

Re

I personally can not comment that the sewage smell has any effect on the areas you mention, but as far as the crow flies, the distance between the Torrevieja sewage works and the two areas you mention is around 4km, As over the last year and Torrevieja has seen a fall in visitors, I hazard a guess that the Sewage treatment plant has not been operating to its maximum capacity, But it is a very large plant and no information is given on its whereabouts/vicinity, As for the smells/stench, this normally happens around 10pm and 6am in the area I have mentioned, At present it is not every night, but I suspect that when the norm returns it will be more nights. My suggestion is always Google map the areas that you intend to look in.
