I know electricity can be expensive in Spain. I pay around €40 a month even when not at my apartment. If I am over for a week in August and put on my airconditioning any idea what the cost might be. It is an modern open plan lounge with 2 bedrooms. I am guessing the bill might go up to €100 for the month. Any advice appreciated. Thank you. Pauline

Our costs hit around 120 EU per month in the hot weather, but we run a pool pump and a/c.
You should expect 80-90 EU per month tops.

Hi Pauline,
Why are you paying €40 per month when you are not there. Do leave something on when you lock up and go?
If not, like me my monthly standing charge is approximately €17 with Siesta

I am using Iberdrola electricity set up by the owners/builders of the new property. I do leave the power on when I am not there. It keeps the fridge, lights and tv/wifi working. I have a caretaker once a month who pops in to check all ok. Not sure how easy it is to change electricity suppliers in Spain.

It’s very easy as long as you have no penalty clause
Take a bill in with Your NIE and passport They will see what they can do for you and if it’s agreeable they take care of the switch over

Before going to the trouble of changing suppliers, you might want to have a look at the Potencia that you are contracted to. Often people are paying for more than they need. I dropped mine by 1kw and saved about €8 a month.
I also have a 2 bedroom apartment and usually pay about €24 a month when I’m not there - with the fridge/freezer running. That’s with Iberdrola.

Hi Shaun
By dropping your potencia, what was the impact, of any, on running multiple appliances? Hob, oven etc. Also, what did you drop your potencia from? I don’t know why I think this, but I thought they were sort of “set”, something like 3.75, 5.25.
I’m on the night time plan and as such can do washing to fit in (heating and water are gas). I think my biggest drain is the oven. I cook and bake quite a lot using it and obviously, that’s done in the day🤪🥂
