Spain no longer issue expat residents with TSEs - their equivalent of the EHIC. That system changed some years ago.

What you have to do is apply for an EHIC-E from the UK. The covers emergency treatment in EU countries other than Spain, and also covers you on trips back to the UK.

Yes, that’s what We did and as I said above, it worked for us.

The spat in the ensuing posts was unnecessary as the simple and concise answer to both the OP's questions was 'no'!

In so far as it was accurate, while the peripheral 'advice' offered may have been of passing interest it didn't alter that fact.

It was a partially open question, so how could there be one answer of 'no'?

I actually gave the advice the OP was looking for, with one caveat - that their circumstances were the same as ours, because I was speaking from direct, recent, personal experience.

Just as an addition to this topic and possibly not directly related to the original question, however, still worth a mention here ,is that the ehice card if planning on visiting The I.O.M ,is not valid in that area ,due to the IOM not being a direct member of The E.U.

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

As I've said, if you are over UK retirement age as we are, you have to contact Newcastle to obtain your special EHIC card. Your UK EHIC is no longer valid, once you are in the Spanish system. You cannot apply for an EHIC online and you cannot get one from Spain, because, as you say, the UK NHS are actually paying your health costs here in Spain.

Please note that lack of previously helpful posts does not necessarily indicate that the current post is any less helpful than that of a well-established member.

That's a good point that I failed to mention. You can only get an EHIC-E if you are in receipt of the state retirement pension or an exportable benefit.

Another thing I failed to mention is that if you are working here and paying into the social security system, then you can get a Spanish TSE card.

Hi, my sister and family live in villamartin. I’m in Manchester doing a nursing degree and am considering an elective in Spain. Can someone tell me how far the nearest hospitals are to villamartin and their names please??

Thanks very much.

Jo

The nearest General Hospital is Torrevieja Hospital, which is 10 minutes by car from Villamartin.

There are numerous other hospitals within an hour's drive.

The Quiron Private Hospital is a couple of kilometres further along the N332.
