We bought our property a year ago and relied on the solicitor to arrange our bank account etc.

We were not given a choice of bank or account subsequently have now got a Bankia account who have been fairly efficient be fair but we have noticed the charges seem to be fairly high compared to the UK .

We have been paying €15 per quarter as the standing bank charge also we seem to be paying a similar amount every time we move money into our Spanish account regardless of the amount? We did think this might have been £ to € issue so we now use a Travelwise account to pay in in € but that hasn’t made any difference.

The reason I’m asking is this the norm are there better options with other banks ?

TIA Jihn

Open yourself a bottle of wine and search for "bank charges" in "Everywhere". Enjoy.

What Cheryl means is use search box at top of page, put 'bank charges' in topic and 'all the forum' in location. You'll see its a topic very well covered on here.

Nearly all banks have charges now. I'm with Sabadell, pay 15€ a quarter, deposit the minimum 700€ a month, but there are certainly no extra charges for depositing money. That's extracting the urine.

Most banks have options on accounts I found it best to go in local branches (when possible) and discuss the best one for your needs. For what it's worth I agree with you regarding wine it's nasty stuff 😝

Hi John,

I have a Bankia account that had low charges but they increased in February or March to €14 per month. They have cheaper options based on buying or setting up two out of three products (from memory the options were taking out home insurance, setting up a monthly deposit of €700+ or using their credit card). I think you have to set them up in branch. There are a number of cheaper real world banks and considerably cheaper online options that other posters have alluded to, but I haven’t explored them.

john

i just went into my branch closed my account then did my direct debits myself without telling my solictor

Iberdrola you just change you bank details online in your account section

HIDRAQUA you fill in a form online then they send you a sepa form to sign and return to them on online

My broadband is with TvHoradada i filled in a sepa form which they sent me after going online  as well and my communtiy charge i  just filled in a new bank account form from my adminastor

i found the all process easy the only tip i would give you would be move your direct debits to starling after your have paid your last direct debit as i can take a couple of weeks for some of the spainish companies to set up your direct debits
