Hi ScottyRob

We are looking at doing the same, a friend of mine brought a Saab convertible down from the UK it cost him 1300 euors to change over to spanich plates, I drove mine down in July when we awere over for a couple of months but I would say long term a left hand drive would be better. I would say over...

...all your probably better off having a car than renting as this would work out very expensive over the summer months, be carefull buying private as someone said if there are any debts to the car these are passed on, ours would get good use between the family and as someone pointed out its 140 euros return to Alicante airport alone which would be 6 months car parking.....

I used to own a garage and the prices in Spain are very high, there were some good lease deals on Nissan Qashqui earlier in the year so it maybe worth a trip to the dealers to check these out, I was looking at Citroen Berlingo, Peugeot Partner size just for luggage when we come out with Golf Clubs or the family is out plus they are very economical and reasonbly cheap to maintain.

Good luck with whatever you decide hopefully we will all get back sometime next year and looking forward to the golf.....!!

Regards

Andrew

Thanks for this Aspen. It’s a lease car we have in the uk so I might look at whether it’s an option to drive it down for a couple of months next summer, just for our first year til we find the right car to buy. I have plenty spare miles on the lease contract however I’ m not sure about whether the terms of hire ( or insurance) allow me to take it overseas .

Longer term I’m erring towards buying a car though. I think I’d prefer a left hand drive over there and renting for months at a time,  in comparison,  seems quite expensive - we’d end up just hiring for short periods at times when we really needed it . I think I’d prefer to buy and have  car available as and when we want it.
Thanks again , lots to think about !

Yes, transfer tax paid by purchaser, this is part of paperwork and hassle when you buy vehicle.

We aren’t in your area, but we eventually bought from a main dealer in Denia. We went to most of them, ie Citroen/VW/Seat/Kia etc etc as the main road into town is lined with showrooms either side. We prefer main dealerships as have always found their service to be reliable and better as they are worried about their reputations.

Thanks Killjoy - others haven’t mentioned the transfer tax . What is this ,is  it paid on purchase by the person buying the car ?

When you buy a second-hand car, any debts accrued to the car become yours (parking tickets, some forms of outstanding finance, etc.).

If you plan to buy a car privately, talk to a gestor first.

A good gestor will provide you with a "standard form" of contract (in Spanish and English). This contract provides for the buyer to accept responsibility for any debt that surfaces from before the date of sale. I don't know how you would enforce it though, but it is a start. In reality, if debt surfaced, you would probably need to take a view of the level of debt, the cost to involve a solicitor, and decide if it is worth the fight.

Additionally, without all the right paperwork, the gestor can't register the car for you, and you will end up stuck. So take pics (using your phone) of the paperwork offered to you with the car, send it to your gestor. Don't part with any money until the gestor has OK'd the paperwork.

The gestor will be able to tell you (in advance) the transfer tax figure and total cost, if you tell him/her what you plan to buy.

its the buyers tax...shouldnt be much on a small car...my Merc was like 1400 but thats worth 30 grand...breakdown cover comes with insurance if you use like Liberty which is best..find a good mate who will drive you to the airport and look after your car...golfers stick together...and Jocks...i would do it but maybe i am too far away...

Hi, we purchased our second hand car off FWR car sales in Alicante.

It’s a family run business by Frank Roscoe and he will arrange everything for you,  very reliable and honest,  first class service.

We park our car at WE park ALC which is practically on the airport at Alicante for €250 annual fee.

Hope this helps.

Brian & Carol.

We purchased an old Seat Ibiza 1.4l off a friend of a friend after putting about we were looking for a vehicle in Spain. We paid 1000€ for 2001 (yes very old by UK standards) but only tiny bit rust on cill, and buyer took us to a gestor to arrange transfer which cost us 150€ and all done properly (they also did a debt check on it). Breakdown is mandatory in Spain with your insurance and we pay 360€ to Liberty Seguros and 54€ tax Yr (by direct debit with Suma) and we took it for our first ITV (45€) visit (we were anxious as didn't know what to expect) just 1 month after buying. That was 2019, it passed with few advisories and this year we had them repaired and a full service(did cost us 440€ but it sailed through with no advisories). We stay for 90 days x 2/Yr and hiring was not just expensive but hassle having to return car back to hirer and take another each month plus we are 70kms away, and the anxiety of the return with the hirer trying to charge for non existant damage too. We dont use airport parking as we come with large van direct to house where we store car in garage when back in UK. Hubby won't drive through Spanish Town streets in a van hence need for car. We are very happy we did and would advise anyone to get their own instead of hiring if you are in Spain for many days in a year, be it long stays like us or short bursts.

Regards

Pauline

Thanks for this Kenneth , these costs don’t seem prohibitive at all - I guess the important point is to find the right car so that repair bills etc don’t start running out of control .

Hi again. You might consider looking on Milanuncios for your future car. The Webpage is automatically translated into English. It will give you time to check prices until you make a decision. When you search, remember to choose a province, that way you won't get results from Málaga or Madrid.

https://www.milanuncios.com/

It is probably similar to autotrader.

Hi,

Recently brought a Ford siesta, 2nd hand cars are expensive compared to an equivalent uk car.

Mine came with all the paperwork change over in the price.

The differences are as follows..

If the car has any debt attached to it you’ll inherit it, I heard stories of unpaid parking fines, speeding tickets and unpaid suma all attached to cars.  But I don’t think you can buy the car if this is the case. You can pay for a search, which will give you peace of mind, it can also confirm the mileage and no of owners etc.

There are a few companies offering parking at the airport, but I would check them out on trip advisor etc.

Our insurance was €315 and comes with break down cover as I believe your not allowed to recover cars in spain.

The car itself is insured and check but anyone over 26 can drive it.

Strangely you have to leave all the documents in the car while in use, that’s the reg doc, insurance certificate and vehicle details.

If you pm me I’ll try to expand on the whole process, we think in approx 3 years we will have retrieved any hire cars fees, which by the way seem to be rising in price inline with gas.

Terry

Please could some kind people recommend a honest , reasonable car hire/,rental  company to use from Alicante airport on a regular basis. It’s so horrible getting ripped off with extra insurance they bully you in to taking ? What is the way I can avoid this intimidating scary sales tactics please?

We are so excited to of just bought a static home just 15 minutes from airport but I am disabled so it’s essential we rent a car, can anybody help please?

Thank you so much in anticipation

Kind regards

I would like to buy a very cheap little runaround for when I’m using my park home, but all the legalities would have to be done please. I will have to resort to hire car for now , who do you recommend please.

Thank you everyone

Kind regards

Wendy
