I drove my car and my motorhome over there (uk spec) and loved it.  Just take the first 30 mins to settle in after getting off the ferry.

Biggest concern for me was remembering to drive on the right hand side.  I stuck a sticker on the dash saying pavement europe and kept it next to the side of the road over there..  Now I find the whole driving experience over there so much better than over here all things considered.

I love it....

Hi, I am thinking of driving through France to Villamartin from the UK, rather than flying as we usually do. We would like to treat it as a leisurely mini holiday, stopping off at various places along the way. Has anyone done this and what advice could you offer regarding ferries, nice places in ...

...France to stay at etc.

Regards Tony

Hi had holiday last september, driving up from Villamartin, staying in Northern Spain on the way up. We can recommend staying in Peniscola (has a long seafront but also a beautiful pueblo where the Pope lived in his castle at the top). Also Roses (seaside town) up near border with France which is close to Cadaques - a beautiful fishing village, well worth a visit (in top 10 beautiful places to visit in Spain). In France we stayed at Gourdes in Provence (in Top 10 of beautiful villages in France).  On the way back to Villamartin we stayed at Tossa da Mar which is lovely with its castle.  We also used Airbnb for some accommodation and stayed a minimum of 2 nights in each location. Hope this helps.

Hi there, we have drove down from Calais to Villamartin on a few occasions, this summer we are driving from Calais, down to Rouen, then to Chartres, staying overnight , detouring to Sarlat on the Dordogne for two nights, then onwards to the Costa Brava for a night, then onwards to Villa Martin, so over four/ five days. Three weeks at the apartment then on route home, heading up the coast of Spain to La Bacares just inside the French border , beautiful little place. Then heading East towards Annecy on the Swiss border. Then-back North West up to Calais . We never book a hotel as you can normally find somewhere to stay, we love the relaxing way when we have the time rather than fly. Mostly we avoid the-motorways, and the Route Nationale is such a good road we use that mostly in France . Enjoy your journey

Hi Tonyevo,

We drove down last October to live in Villamartin.

Check the prices carefully for the tunnel. We booked a return (no intention of using it) that was cheaper than a single!

As for driving, as long as you concentrate, especially at roundabouts, you'll be fine. I also keep a piece of paper in sight with a rough speed conversion on it. Can't get my head around KPH!!!

The main thing is don't rush and enjoy the drive.

Thats good.  Wife hates ferry.  Do you buy well in advance?  How flexible are the tickets...

Love this forum......

Hi

Just book around three weeks in advance. We have found if you arrive at Chunnel early you can normally get on !
