Just noticed a couple of sneaky habits in the San Miguel branch when shopping yesterday. Before weighing Chicken for sale they actually put them inside a large oversized plastic tray to include the weight of the tray in the price you are paying. So in effect you would be paying 6 Euros a kilo for a plastic tray. The tray was also far bigger than necessary. The Mercadona Chicken we purchased of a similar size was in a much more appropriately sized tray and they put it in the tray after weighing anyway, so you don’t pay for the plastic. If you were buying preweighed Steak at 20 Euro’s a kilo, you would also be paying for the tray in Masymas.

Also they were advertising Pineapples for 89 cents a kilo. We took a half cut one and noticed that for that they were charging 1.09. Presumably because that was either pre cut, or you have to buy the whole Pineapple. No mention either way in their leaflet.

They may only be small amounts, but it’s the principle, they don’t do it in Mercadona.

Have you weighed the container separately to see what it is? May be nothing.

Hi. They reset the scales usually for the container then weigh the chicken. Normally they have one near the scales they put on first , take it off and put yours on.

Hi. No not in this case. I checked before posting, the combined weight of the packaging and the chicken is what we have been charged for.  It weighs 40 grams, so if you were buying some Beef for 20 Euros a kilo you’d be paying 80 cents for the container.

Why didn't you complain in the shop when you bought it? You bought a chicken at probably €4/kg so why compare with beef at €20. Do you realise how much salt water solution they pump into chickens? You pay for that too!

I didn’t complain at the time because I didn’t know they were charging for the container. The procedure Ahf1063 describes is used by Mercadona and presumably other supermarkets and I assumed also by Masymas. It was only when I got home and was curious that I weighed the Chicken that I found out.

The reason I mention steak is for information for someone thinking of going in to buy some as the practise Affects them the most! It would be the same additional plastic cost for other products, such as Salmon which I have often seen at 20 Euros a kilo in there.

Yes I realise the tricks with pumping water in Chicken, Bacon, etc, but I believe that is adopted by all the supermarkets.

I appreciate the cost of the containers is only small, but anyone buying 2-3 containers of meat or Fish every week in Masymas will be paying 70-100 Euros a year for plastic!
