Hi Denis and welcome to the forum.

Part of the process for re-registering your car onto Spanish plates includes the ITV, Spain's equivalent of the MOT.  Once your car is re-registered here, it will have to undergo regular ITV tests, in place of the MOT, the frequency of which will depend on the age of your vehicle.

Assuming your vehicle is right-hand drive, it will need to have the headlights, and possibly foglight(s) adapted for driving on the left.

I would highly recommend that you contact a specialist, such as Leigh Blann, to obtain a quote for importing and re-registering your car - if this is done within a certain period, you may be able to mitigate the import duty as part of your "goods and chattels":

Once you have an idea of cost, and depending on the age and value of the car, you may decide that it would be more cost-effective to buy a car in Spain.

You may also want to consider the convenience of driving a RHD car when encountering toll booths and car park ticket machines in Spain, although not an issue if you always drive with a passenger 😉

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi denisdonor

I bought my car over from UK last October. I used car Registrations Spain to handle the change over to Spanish plates, they were fabulous. It cost me about 1300 euros to change it over including headlights as they didn't need changing only adjusting. Once Itv done no need for your UK Mot. As far as tolls and parking booths being on the opposite sideI have no problem getting out of the car and attending the machine...takes a few seconds and generally there's no queue behind you. For me knowing the history of my car was more important than having to buy a car here that costs so much more and you don't know what your getting.

Thank you Colin that not a bad price and I agree with you about knowing your own car as mine is own 3 years old and look after it so thanks very much for the information

Don’t forget there will be import/ duty to pay on your car if you are importing it into Spain and this is calculated on make/model and value of your car.

I used CarRegistrations who helped me with the full process

depending on the model of the car you can alter/adjust your own headlights but they will be tested in Spain to make sure they conform.

I drove down from Carlisle and it took me 3 days driving 9 hours per day, make sure you have European breakdown cover,my wife paid all the tolls on her side but people don’t mind you getting out and doing it yourself, also have cash handy as one tolls contactless wasn’t working.

You can also buy a toll tag which which allows access through the tolls and it’s taken from your account later.
