As I understand it, if we move to Spain as a UK pensioner receiving a state pension, I would be able to register for the Spanish health system. However, my wife is 60 and not old enough to qualify. I thought I read somewhere I can claim her as a dependent and get her on the system after a year? TIA.

If you are entitled to healthcare with an S1, your wife is also eligible and you don't have to wait a year to get her classed as a beneficiary.

You need to claim your S1 from Newcastle as a pensioner and also her S1 as the beneficiary of a pensioner at the same time.

When you come to Spain you will register with the social security office and then with the local health centre to get a SIP (healthcard) and hers will state beneficiary but she will be entitled to the same care as you.

Just make sure that, when she gets her pension, you change the beneficiary to one in her own right as if anything happens to you she would lose the healthcare.

This link will take you to a guide issued by Age in Spain which explains how to obtain form S1 and how to register it with the INSS here in Spain:
