Hi,
I hear that there is speculation that Spain is looking to amend the 90 day rule. Does anyone have any informed knowledge of whether this is likely and what might replace it?

The short answer to your question is No.
The reason for this is in your first paragraph, the word speculation.
This comes up on a regular basis and has done for a couple of years. A couple of regions, heavily dependent on British tourism, have said they want to increase the 90 days but nothing has yet come of it. Also gets rumoured that France wants to do the same but, again, nothing more than speculation.
Remember, the 90 days in one go is for all including those from the EU. They can, however, register their stay as a citizen of the EU and go on a register to show they have medical and financial cover for up to 180 days. The register is only for EU citizens though.
As a Schengen area rule no one member country can unilaterally modify it but in any case the alleged loss of income to Spain resulting from the 90 day rule is grossly over inflated, mostly by those with vested interests in seeing it relaxed, meaning that there is little or no motivation for Spain to want or need to do so.
In short forget it coz short of UK rejoining the EU it ain't gonna happen.

marcliff you are 100% correct in what you say however the Spanish authorities do not enforce this rule on EU visitors, just like they never enforced the rule on Brits pre brexit, i was one of thousands of Brits that came to Spain pre brexit and stayed much longer than the 90 days, indeed i know Brits that stayed in Spain for years without registering.

They don't really enforce it on UK passport holders but they are happy to stamp the passports as per EU rules.
This will change for everyone when the EES is finally implemented.

Oh but they do and plenty of Brits have been fined for overstaying.I haven’t heard of any being banned from the Schengen are yet.

I think you are misunderstanding the post. It is the matter of being limited to 90 days in one trip only. UK allows EU citizens (and other countries that don't require visas) to visit for up to 180 days in one go. Whilst both allow that 180 days per year, coming to the EU (less Ireland) is restricted to 90 days in one visit and some, the "snowbirds" who want to come for the whole of Winter are no longer allowed to.
The "freedom of movement" bit is still there, just the limit on the amount of days in one go that some people are not happy with. But it was all pointed out before the vote to leave and that's been done and dusted so no need to keep dragging it up.
