Well nobody is getting  2 x90 days this year

Your thinking about it the wrong way.

Here is the official explanation:

90/180 Schengen Visa Rule

The 180-day period keeps rolling. Therefore, anytime you wish to enter the Schengen, you just have to count backwards the last 180 days, and see if you have been present in the Schengen for more than 90 days throughout that period.

A little too simplistic. The 90 days doesn't start at the beginning of the year, it starts from the time you enter the Schengen zone. So it could start April 22nd if that was your first day.

If you take your example and stayed for 90 days until the end of June, you could then stay another 90 days starting on July 1st, which would mean you've stayed 180 days in a 180 day period. In reality you shouldn't return for 90 days after the end of June....

...

The way I look at is that you have 90 days in and 90 days out, for every day you spend in the zone you need to spend a day out of it (you could substitute day for week or month), starting from whenever you entered the zone.

I know I've taken your example to the extreme and no one would actually do that, I am just trying to explain how it works in my head 😁

Thanks for that explanation ,if there has to be a 90 day gap from the date of the last day of your previous 90 day stay the later in the year you finish your first 90 day stay ,the less chance you have of completing your 2nd 90 day stay ,and if that's the case I may incur problems when I visit Spain  in November  as there is certainly  not a 90 day gap

If I read this correctly, it doesn't matter when you start your 90 day stay, it's not counted in calendar years, it's a rolling 180 day period, so it could start in May, June, November etc.

If you were here for 90 days and are coming back in October before your 90 days away have run their course, then yes it could be a problem with immigration when you arrive.

How long were you here for? When did you arrive and when did you leave?

Morning  ,if my reading of your explanation is correct  ,when your 90 day period ends ,whenever, you have to be out the  schengen area for 90 days before you can return, this is what I originally thought ,my original booking was 21 November, we left  Schengen area on 11 August  ,having spent 82days via France .My situation will test the cooperation between  France and Spain  as having driven from UK to Spain only checks were via France

We had 40 years of the tabloids banging on about the curvature of bananas and other such made up nonsense, we do have to live with it but you can expect us to keep pointing out what a stupid mistake we've made.
